Short Story Challenge Code
Dylan Thomas was a free spirit who grew up and was influenced by the ‘..ugly, lovely..’ town of Swansea. His poetry and prose reflected this love not only of the urban area but of the beauty of the Gower Peninsula and Mumbles.
Eligibility |
The challenge is open to persons of all ages from anywhere in the world apart from employees and affiliates of Dylan Down the Ups and their immediate families. |

Subjects |
There are no subject titles but Dylan Thomas’ words or images must be identifiable within the work. We are looking for a modern interpretation of the theme. Entries will be judged on originality, quality of language, clarity and presentation and the suitability of the work for both print and broadcasting. |
Language |
Entries must be written in the English language |
Originality |
All entries must be original and unpublished (online, on paper or broadcasted) and not marketed elsewhere until after the announcement of the winning entries. Winners may decline publication through Dylan Down the Ups and simply accept other portions of the prize. |
Authors |
If the story is written by more than one author they must each fall within the same age category. |
Format of Entries |
Entries will be accepted in both paper and electronic format |
Paper Entries |
These must be typewritten and double spaced on one side of A4 (210x297mm) paper with one inch (25mm) margins all round and in 12 point font. Manuscripts will not be returned so please do not send the originals. On the first page should be typed your name, address, telephone number and email address together with the word count. Fasten all together with a single paper clip – no staples, binders or presentation folders. Electronic Entries |
These must be in a PC compatible file format free from any type of computer virus, worm, Trojan etc. We will accept files with the following extensions: *.doc, *.txt, *.html, *.htm. Entries must be typewritten and double spaced on one side of A4 (210x297mm) paper with one inch (25mm) margins all round and in 12 point font. Manuscripts will not be returned so please do not send the originals. On the first page should be typed your name, address, telephone number and email address together with the word count. Entry Fee |
The entry fee for Category A and Category B is £2.00 (GBP) and for Category C is £5.00 (GBP) per short story entered made payable to dylandowntheups.com. We also accept credit and debit card payments through a secure link on our website. If paying by credit card online and sending a hard copy manuscript please enclose a printout of your receipt with the manuscript. You may enter as many stories as you wish and you may make one payment and one entry form for all entries. Multiple entries from one association or school in the Under 12 and Under 18 sections attract a group discount - £1.00 per child participating. In this case, the word ‘Group’ means more than 6 people |

Winners |
Shortlisted authors will be notified by 23rd October 2009 and the winners announced in The Chattery, Uplands, Swansea on 27th October. If you have not been contacted by this date you may assume that you are not a finalist and may market your work elsewhere. |
Prizes |
All prize winners have option to have their story published on the dylandowntheups.com website and to take advantage of the marketing of the challenge in the wider media. |

Acknowledgement |
Enclose a self-addressed postcard and second class stamp (or International Reply Coupon (IRC) if you are sending from the UK) so that we can acknowledge receipt of your entry. |
Chances of winning will depend on the number of eligible entries received. All entries will be judged and winners selected based on merit. Entries will be judged on the basis of clarity and presentation of the subject, quality of language, suitability for print and broadcast and originality of the subject treatment. We can assume no responsibility for lost, late, misdirected or unintelligible entries or for any computer, online or technical malfunctions that may occur. No submissions will be accepted after the posted deadline for any reason. The sole determinant of time for the purposes of email entries will be our emails servers. The sole determinant of time for purposes of postal mail or other entries to the contest will be when they were actually received at our offices. We are not responsible for postal mail or email delivery problems, technical, hardware or software failures of any kind, lost or unavailable network connections or failed, incomplete, garbled or delayed computer transmissions which may limit participants ability to participate. By entering the challenge participants release and hold us and our respective affiliates, directors, officers, employees and agents harmless from any and all liability for any injuries, loss or damage of any kind arising from or in connection with the challenge or any prize won. The competition is governed by the laws of England and Wales and any action against us must be commenced in the courts of Wales. This challenge is void where prohibited by law. We are not responsible for unallowable or unlawful entries. Winners are responsible for reporting and paying applicable taxes on cash awards to the appropriate authorities. |
