Background to challenges

There is an overwhelming demand in Swansea and around the world for creative art.

For the first time, the Uplands is offering an opportunity for writers, artists, musicians and actors to follow in the footsteps of the genius and enigmatic Uplands boy, Dylan Thomas.

Dylan was born and grew up in the Uplands and was influenced by the ‘..ugly, lovely..’ town of Swansea.

His poetry and prose reflected the influence that people, urban areas, Mumbles and the Gower Peninsula had on him.

The challenges aim to echo that passion in celebration of the 95th anniversary of Dylan Thomas’ birth at 5 Cwmdonkin Drive in the Uplands

The title given to a piece of art can either be its beginning or its final touch – where the creative artist goes is influenced by themselves, their imagination, the sight, sounds and smell of the countryside and towns around them.
